July 2025 - Porcelain Party

Porcelain - from the moment I started making ceramics, I knew I wanted to work with it at some point. Everything I heard about it though was that it was a really difficult material to work with. So naturally as a beginner I was hesitant. At some point last year I just kind of got a bug about it and decided to get a sample of it. 4 pounds, that was it. I was able to play with it a little bit and learned that it is amazing to throw with. So soft and smooth, nothing like the heavily grogged stuff I had used in school. So I was hooked. Decided over the summer to pivot from some of my goals again — I know shocker — and ordered a larger amount of that same porcelain so I could work with it more.

I am OBSESSED with how pure white it fires, as well as it’s translucency. Soooo naturally we (royal we — just me and all my personalities) had to make some lanterns/luminaries. AND OMG was that a success. One of the first pieces I threw with it I tried to make as thin while throwing as it would handle — then trimmed a little more off — it did NOT disappoint!!! Check out the gallery in this post to see some of these pieces I have made.

Also the clay body is Kota Porcelain from Kentucky Mudworks - it is a cone 6 and positively magical.
